Cafe Au Lait – A Classic Coffeehouse, A Hidden Gem

Every so often you, as a consumer, happen upon a product so unusual, so unexpected, that it blows your mind.  I do not usually have these types of experiences.  Today, however, I did.

From the outside, Café Au Lait seems one of those silly little shops with plastic chairs, rickety tables, mediocre food and, of course, screaming children.  There are scenes painted onto the windows, and a neon OPEN sign hung above the door.  Here goes nothing, I thought to myself, pushing the door open and stepping over the threshold.

What I saw made me stop in my tracks.  Gone are expectations of cheap furniture, bright fluorescent lights, and loud children.  Instead, we find wood flooring, high ceilings, burlap bags of coffee hung on the walls, and soft lighting.  Straight ahead is the long counter, with a bakery case on one end, filled with cookies, muffins, and delicious looking cakes.

The menu is full – breakfast options, lunch options, and many drinks from which to choose.  Regular coffee and a breakfast sandwich?  You got it.  Feeling fancy and want some bubble tea and quiche?  No problem.  Hot tea to go with your turkey club sandwich?  Certainly.

Now, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a properly made cappuccino.  That is what I got at Café Au Lait.  They know how to steam the milk, how to pull espresso, the correct amount of espresso and milk to frothed milk; nothing tasted burnt.  We took our goodies over to a table by the stone fireplace (!!) and sat, gazing around.  The tables are clean, matching, and solid.  There is a sofa in front of the fireplace, and comfy leather chairs in the corner, flanking a nice long coffee table.

Café Au Lait is clean, classic, well-run and a place that I will definitely visit over and over again.  Yet another reason why we should never judge a book by it’s cover.
